About the Fam: Families Helping Families

Nearly four decades ago, our grandfather, Jon Rogers, founded San Francisco Bay Gourmet Coffee with a simple mission: to ensure that everyone involved - our farmers, our family, and our customers - would all benefit. From a family of 6, we have grown to a family of over 25,000.

In 1986, one of Jon's sons, Pete, traveled to Guatemala and witnessed coffee farmers living in dire poverty. This experience prompted him to return home and discuss with his family the need to transform the coffee industry. Since then, every bean we purchase, every pound we roast, and every cup you drink has been part of our ongoing mission to make a difference.

As part of this mission, our family has set ambitious goals, aiming to open the 60th school and complete the 1,500th home construction this year.

Growing the Largest Family in the World

The proverb "give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime" encapsulates our approach. In 2017 alone, we distributed over 4 million coffee trees to small-scale farmers worldwide, and this is just the beginning. We employ 28 agronomists who provide comprehensive training, from soil analysis to proper fertilization, helping farmers increase their productivity and income tenfold.

Generation Three Compostable OneCup*

In 2009, we embarked on a journey to create a single-serve coffee solution that would eliminate harmful plastic waste. The result was our first-generation OneCup, which used 33% less plastic. We then developed a corn byproduct-based ring, a paper and potato waste lid, and a paper filter, all adhering together.

Today, our products are certified compostable in industrial facilities, and we are working towards home composting certification. In the future, we aim to make our products marine compostable, further reducing our environmental impact.
